Poverty hangs over Haiti like a thick smog blocking even the smallest rays of hope for so many. The government is in gridlock and the economy is sputtering. Years of spiritual oppression brought on by voodoo and forces of darkness are grudgingly giving way to the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Mission Discovery has been serving in Haiti for the past eight years and our teams have made a significant impact in the city of Port de Paix. Teams could serve through block construction, painting, clean-up, brush removal at the HOLD the Children orphanage or other church locations. Wondering if help is on the way or will show up at all, residents of Galveston Island and neighboring coastal communities of Houston dig through mountains of destroyed belongings, trying desperately to remember life just a few short weeks ago…Wondering if life will ever be the same. Hurricane Ike struck Galveston, Galveston Bay and the Houston Ship Canal areas during the dark night hours of September 12th and 13th, 2008. This massive storm slammed into Galveston Island with over a 20 foot storm surge. Massive portions of the island and neighboring gulf shore communities are completely destroyed. The enormity of the storm stretched some 200 miles (east to west) and caused major damage hundreds of miles north of Houston. In comparison to recent disasters which receive months of press, the national media cycle for Ike lasted approximately 3 days and Houston communities have been forgotten or simply ignored. Many residents are left with no hope of rebuilding wondering why they are left behind in the wake of this major national disaster. Mission Discovery needs your help to bring the love of Christ to the residents of South Texas, as we rebuild their lives after Hurricane Ike ripped their lives and homes apart. Currently we are looking for teams to help clearing debris and household items that have been destroyed by the surge of saltwater that swept over entire neighborhoods. Once debris removal is complete a new phase of aid will continue with the rebuilding of homes requiring additional fees as we assist with material purchases for this massive project. For now the cost is $289.00 which includes lodging (using the camp-style facility of MercyResponse), all meals (Monday through Saturday breakfast), all all the tooling needed to complete the task of helping complete the task for your assigned family(s). Each night there is an evening meeting complete with opportunities to hear how God is moving is working in and through you during your experience of serving.
