Port De Paix, Haiti Mission Trips

A lack of pencils—that was the reason Mission Discovery initially created HOLD the Children. And now 17 years later, HOLD goes far beyond providing school supplies and paying teachers’ salaries in poverty-stricken schools on the northern coast of Haiti. Structured as a child sponsorship program, HOLD targets the overall needs of schools as well as maintains an orphanage near Port-de-Paix started by Mission Discovery in 2010.

Immerse yourself in this life-giving culture at the schools and orphanage as you come face-to-face with children whose future now looks more hopeful. Open to all, but especially relevant to HOLD sponsors, this is a wonderful opportunity to give of yourself by engaging the students and staff.

As a HOLD child sponsor or a supporter of the HOLD the children Home, this trip offers you an opportunity to see where and how your monthly contributions are used.

You may visit some New Haitian Mission Baptist Schools supported by HOLD and you will visit the HOLD the children orphanage spending time with the 45 children living there.

The 45 children living at the home will capture your heart and leave you changed forever. You may even be able to meet the child you sponsor.  It is hard to assure that your sponsor child is in school during our visit, but we will do our best to arrange that.

  • Lodging:  Teams are housed at a local hotel in Port de Paix which provides a place to unwind and relax at the end of each day.
  • Food:  Safe food and drinking water are provided by the hotel.  Lunches are sandwiches on the worksite.
  • Transportation:  Once you land in Port au Prince, all your ground transportation is taken care of by Mission Discovery.
  • Daily Work:  Your team will visit schools, lead children's Bible school, spend time with the HOLD Home residents, and perhaps be involved in light construction and upkeep of the orphanage.

*Trip cost is price plus registration fee.

On November 10th last year, our team of 25 people was ready to depart on our annual trip to visit the Christian Alliance School in Cap Haitien, Haiti.  In just two days we would be with our Haitian friends.  Then word came that serious flooding was occurring in Cap and the forecast was for torrential rain to continue for several more days.  The roads in Cap were impassible and the airline cancelled flights.  We had to postpone our trip.  Pastor Bazile, our host in Cap Haitien, had arrived several days earlier and was now in the middle of a serious disaster.  Homes and possessions were washi

I am writing this update from the Habitation Hatt Hotel in Port au Prince, Haiti.  We are preparing to leave on the eight hours bus ride to Port de Paix, which is where much of the HOLD the Children work is located.  From inside the walls of this hotel, all appears tranquil and content.  The cloudless sky is as blue as the eye can imagine.  The beauty of Haiti is hiding the reality of the world outside.  This will change when we join the chaos on the outside.  Enormous congestion and terrible roads make the 120 mile journey to Port de Paix an endurance test.  Though I’ve made this trip doze

*This article was written by Kellie Doyle, HOLD Sponsor and Supporter. “I love to travel and our 20 year wedding anniversary was coming up.  For our 10 year anniversary we took a trip and learned to scuba dive.  My husband is creative, knows me so well, and is great at surprises.  So I waited with great expectation to see what he had planned for our 20th.

God continues to bless the work at the HOLD the Children Home in Haiti.  It seems like it was just yesterday that we stood on the roof of the Orphanage.  Our vision was to have a place where we could prepare the older kids for the day when they would leave the orphanage.  We dreamed of building transitional homes where they could learn to live as a family and be taught vocational skills.  They would learn to speak English and use a computer as preparation for life on their own.

What an exciting week we had!  Last week we had a team of 19 participants with us visiting the HOLD Home in Lavaud, Haiti.  It was so exciting to see the progress that has been made since last April!  We’ve been updating along the way, but it was neat to see the new kitchen and storage area in person.

I think you’re talking to me.  Or at least trying to…first, the moment under the mango tree of feeling so small and inadequate for such a big scary job and responsibility.  And then yesterday.  Oh these kids, they have my heart.  Especially Louisiana and Sageline.  Their smiles melt me.  After spending the entire day with the two of them, I just wish I could take them home.  After our workday at the orphanage we had another church service there and I definitely had a moment with you.

It's that time of year again! January 1, 2014 is around the corner. Many of us take this time to reflect on the past twelve months and decide what parts of ourselves we hope to change and improve for the upcoming year. Before we celebrate 2014, let’s take a look at some of the most popular new year's resolutions for Americans: 1. Spend More Time with Friends and Family 2. Get Fit, Exercise More 3. Lose Weight 4. Enjoy Life, Manage Stress 5. Learn Something New

HOLD The Children is a division of Mission Discovery that helps children in developing countries go to school. Mission Discovery also supports HOLD The Children orphanage, home to more than forty abandoned or orphaned children in northern Haiti, as well as a school for deaf children in Eden, Jamaica. We support these schools and orphanages through individual child sponsorship.
